Colorized Mario's Tribute to the Fabulous 1958 Cars

1958 was a Recession year which affected the Auto Industry as well as all the other industries. 1958 had the lowest total auto sales in the decade of just 4,567,518 cars and it took 2 years for sales to reach 7 million in 1960.

Unemployment in Detroit reached 20%, marking the height of the Recession of 1958 in the United States.

The cars for 1958 were longer, lower, with many options and color choices. Quad headlights were now standard across the industry and engine sizes grew along with horsepower. By now all the cars had a 12-volt electrical system to provide more power for starting the larger engines and to power all the new options.

Here is my tribute to the Fabulous 1958 cars. Enjoy, Mario.

The 58 Buick had the most chrome of any car ever! I read the car had 30% chrome over its surface. Good choice in picking that car Dave and have a Happy Thanksgiving! Semper Fi, Mario

Mario, you just keep it coming because we all love you for it. In the GM line I would own any one of those fabulous 58's. In the Ford line I would own the Mercury Turn Pike cruiser. In the Plymouth line I would own the Fury in a heart beat. In the Packard line I would own the coupe and in the Studebaker line I would own the Commander coupe. There was a general down turn in production for most cars that year from the previous year, except for Chevrolet and AMC. Cheers.

Thank you George for all your insights and comments. I have to agree I too love all the GM cars for 1958. They were all a one year only design and all had quad headlights for the first time.

The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser is also a favorite of mine. I don't understand why it wasn't a big seller. They were years ahead of their time.

And finally the Plymouth Fury is another favorite of mine too. The 58 was an updated version of the 57 which I always loved. Rare cars today,

Thank you George for your insights and knowledgeable comments all year long. I really appreciate your posts and all your car show pictures. Cheers to my Canadian friend, Mario

Mario, I appreciate the kind words. The car shows are all over for the year but there is an indoor classic car and parts meet coming up in early December. I also plan on posting pictures of some of my plastic car models that I built in 70's and very early 80's. Stay tuned. Cheers.

The indoor car show sounds great, George. I hope to see a lot of pictures. December is just around the corner. Your car models post is a nice idea and looking forward to that. Cheers my friend, Mario

I'm sure I'm the odd duck here but I have to go with pics 13-16 to honor my grandfather who allowed me to use his 58 Olds 98 to go to school and work. Granted his was a 4 door and wasn't the CHICK MAGNET I had hoped for but it sure beat walking to school and work uphill both ways in snow up to your.. I used to love showing off the hidden gas cap on the Olds. I would tell girls if they could figure out where the gas cap is they would get a kiss. Now not one girl found it. I didn't think it was that hard. Maybe I'm not seeing what they saw.

So Mario 100 pics for the tribute to 1958... Nice work. I give it a 5 star rating.

Well done just like the wife's turkey yesterday. so what if it was turkey jerky, we still counted our blessings. I hope everyone did.

Rob

Thank you Rob for your unique story regarding your 1958 Olds. They were huge cars as well as the other 58 GM cars but very comfortable to drive.

I wonder why none of the girls knew the secret gas cap on your Olds? But it was nice of your Grandfather letting you borrow his car for school.

Cheers to you my friend, Mario

1958 other than the year I was born, will forever be a great year for automotive design. Bring on the chrome and mass and the over indulgence. After all that is what made them great and memorable. Cheers.
