1955 Ford Thunderbird

Hotrod T-bird

This is my 1955 hotrod T-bird.

292 Y block bored .060 over to 301 cu in. Forged TRW's, Holman Moody 882 cam, ported heads, '57 Ford 2-4 intake with Holley 4000 carb's, 40 series Flowmasters. World Class T-5 tranny, 3.31 highway gears, 11" disc brakes on front drum rear, rack & pinion steering.

I rebuilt it in 2003 and have put abt. 15,000 miles on it since then, I've driven the long haul in the 2004 Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour from Arlington TX to Green Bay WI, also been all over Texas and in 2007 I drove it to Joplin MO for the HAMB Nationals at MOKAN Dragway.

I have gotten as good as 18.9 mpg cruising on the highway @70 mph ------ and alot less when running thru the gears and getting my foot in all 8 barrels.

Hope you guys like it, I'm lovin it and putting as many miles on it as I can.

Richard

Oh yeah, the flames !!! In 2003 when I rebuilt the car I had 8-ball, (Rick Mayo), of 8 ball engineering in Clovis New Mexico free hand the flames and put 'em down over the Acrylic lacquer paint that my brother and I put on the car in 1983. The old black is holding up pretty good and makes me feel alot more comfortable that I don't have to worry about rock chips and dings, and the flames just couldn't be any more fun !!

I like your 'Bird! Always did like those. My Dad had one of the first '55's built, a 3 speed, o/d which he drag raced in Williams Bay, Wisconsin and then Los Angeles in '55. First car I ever drove (6 years old). It was clocked @ 134 MPH with a little aerodynamic work on the frt wheelwells and blocked off hood scoop. He taped pieces of yarn all over the hood and fenders ala wind tunnel simulation to see what was really happening. The factory scoop actually worked in reverse, sucking air away from the carb at speed, causing the engine to starve at slightly over 100MPH. Also, the front end would get very light over 100 mph until he fabbed some new inner fender wells to keep air out from under the fenders. After humiliating the owner of a new Jag 140 in L.A. he sold the car to the Jag's owner.

Cool T-Bird! I dig the flames, and the dual-quads are a nice touch!

To heck with what the purists say. Your car is so kool. The only thing that I would change is to go to Police steel wheels with Moon eyes caps. Tiger302

Not many 292 dual carb manifolds around. 292 top end oil was really weak. Remember the overhead oil kits for the rockers? Very nice ride.
