Ted Harbit's '63 Studebaker R2 Super Lark

Supercharged 289 cu. in. 289 HP Studebaker R2

At the 2012 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race

This car is used mainly for the PSMCDR held in Michigan each year but is driven some on the street.

After running it a few years at the PSMCDR, we decided to have it "certified" to verify it is stock. Before having it certified, the best time was 13.4's. After certification it ran 13.30.

The engine is bored .060" to 299" (PSMCDR allows .070" overbore) with 9.0 to 1 compression, cast iron factory headers, 2 1/2" exhaust with straight through mufflers, front disc power brakes, T-10 close ratio four speed, Dana 44 Twin Traction 4.55 rear, front and rear sway bars, radius bars, tachometer, 160 mph speedometer, reclining front bucket seats, etc.

Some of the outstanding features of the Studebaker engines include forged cranks, rods, and rockers, gear driven cam (no chain), thick cylinder walls, and shaft mounted rockers.

The 13.30 was in 2004 right after it was certified. The 12.67 was a few years later and at Muncie Dragway in Indiana where the traction is about the best in the country. Running on street tires, it is really hard to get good traction at the Pure Stock drags as they do not prep the track that much.

In 1963 my father raced for Studebaker. He ran a 1963 Super Lark, it was white with blue stripes. We lived in South Bend and have been trying to find out what happened to the car. Dad's name was Dick Ross. Ever see or hear about this car? He ran at Osceola, Bunker Hill, and Martin 131 Dragway in the b/fx class.

My friend Alan Tate passed away November 21! Just a few days back. When I was 16 and Alan 18 he had a Studebaker Lark like this one. It had a V-8 engine and 4 speed. Can’t remember the HP. It was in the 289 range. It was fast. We were out running Mustang’s that just came out that were running 289 engines. We had some good times in the old Studebaker. Picked up lots of girls with it!!! The good old days!! Old Alan is looking down on us now. We’ll be riding that Studebaker again one day. RIP Alan my friend. J.C.
