Corvairs are great performing, great handling cars. Add in an engine that puts over 220 horses to the rear wheels and modify the suspension to handle that kind of power in an independntly suspended, 2,400 lb car and you have the recipe for one hell of a Mustang-eater!

I hear stories like this pretty often. Funny, I've never spoken to anyone who had a bad word about the handling of the Corvair they used to own. Just air up the tires as the factory recommended and the early models like your '62 are fine, neutral-handling little cars. The later cars from 1965 through '69 are downright great handlers, even in stock form.

Maybe not the most precise handling but by far the most fun driving car I've ever owned. Definitely not as "ass happy" as an old-school 911 could be! Funny how that car's quirky tendencies were celebrated and how a skillful driver was considered rewarded. If the Corvair had worn a Porsche nameplate, it'd probably still be around in some form.
I sure do miss mine and no, I never wrecked it. Extremely reliable, always ready to run no matter what. Had some FANTASTIC times in that car. It was a beater I picked up in the mid 90s for $800. I got my $800 worth and then some!
