Yes, no doubt about it that this is the car that saved Ford from going belly up and belly up they were very near. It seems hard to imagine now but Ford was a distant third after GM and Mopar after the war. I have always liked the 49 and 50 but not so much as of 51. No doubt the 49 Ford was and is an automotive icon. Cheers.

I forgot to mention that I have never seen one of these cars with an inline six cylinder. After many years of car shows as of about 1975, I have never seen a six cylinder version of these Fords. It is good to know that they existed though. Cheers.

You're correct George 49 Ford 6 cyl are rare. Out of over 1.1 million 49 Fords built only 204K were 6 cyl and 900K were V8.
I added a nice video on installing a new manifold on a rare 6 cyl 49 Ford. Check it out. Cheers.

The 1949 Ford was the first post-war vehicle Ford produced with a completely new design. Under Henry Ford II’s leadership it was created by famed industrial and automotive designer, George Walker. It was known as the “shoe-box” design the “slab sided” Ford.
The 1949 Ford was redesigned from the ground up; only the powertrain and 114-inch wheelbase were retained from the 1941-1948 generation. Carried over from the previous generation, a 226 cubic-inch inline-6 was the standard engine with an optional 239 cubic-inch Flathead V8.
The development process required 10 million man-hours and cost Ford an estimated $72 million (about $770 million in 2020).
In the center of the "Bullet-nose" grille emblem, Ford embossed either a "6" or an "8" on top of a red circle, denoting an inline-6 or V8 engine.
The 1949 Ford was introduced at a gala event at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on June 10, 1948. Ford returned to first place among American manufacturers, selling 1,118,740 Ford cars. Priced at $1,510 - $2,270.
Historians refer to the 1949 Ford as the vehicle that saved FoMoCo as it was the 1949 Ford that started the company on the track from losses in the immediate post-war period to profits in the 1950s.
